ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule has been suspended from the governing party.

The party made the decision to suspend all members charged with serious crimes if they refuse to step aside following the party’s national working committee (NWC) on Monday.

The decision to suspend Magashule effectively bars him from party activities for the duration of his corruption trial.

Magashule is also barred from carrying out his Secretary-General duties, including making public announcements or mobilizing members of the party during his corruption trial.

He will also not be able to represent the organisation until the final outcome of his court proceedings.

Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte is expected to act in his position.

Magashule is facing charges of fraud, theft, corruption and money laundering related to the controversial asbestos removal audit in the Free State.

The asbestos removal project cost more than R250-million and was completed when Magashule was Free State Premier.

The case against Magashule and other co-accused is expected to continue in August later this year.
