The DA in the Western Cape has backed the City of Cape Town’s decision to declare an intergovernmental dispute with Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia in a bid to secure investigative powers for the city’s metro police officers.
The city wants Cachalia to amend the South African Police Service (SAPS) Amendment Bill to expand the powers of metro police, allowing them to investigate crime rather than being limited to law enforcement and handing cases over to the SAPS.
In a statement on Monday, the DA said the dispute, if successful, would enable Cape Town’s metro police officers to investigate criminal cases directly.
“The intergovernmental dispute will, should the City succeed, see its high-performing Metro Police officers finally able to investigate crime – not just to identify and confront crime when it happens.”
