THE Democratic Alliance has taken over the City of Ekurhuleni’s position of Speaker after the party’s councillor Raymond Dlamini won 116 of the votes.

This means the DA received votes from EFF and ActionSA to claim victory.

Ekurhuleni is one of the hung councils in Gauteng.

The ANC received 38.19% votes, followed by the DA with 28.72% and the EFF with 13.47%.

This means a coalition government will have to be formed.

“I promise to at all times act in the good interest of the municipality,” he said after his election.

“I will make sure that I focus on all council issues affecting our communities out there.”

The Ekurhuleni council is expected to elect the new City mayor this afternoon.

Voting for the mayor of Ekurhuleni is currently underway.

Former Ekhurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina is expected to contest against DA leader in Ekurhuleni Alderman Tanya Campbell for the position of mayor.
