Wiandre Pretorius, implicated in the extrajudicial killing of Emmanuel Mbense at the Madlanga Commission, died by suicide at a filling station in Brakpan, east of Johannesburg, on Saturday night.
Without naming him, South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said on Sunday that an inquest docket had been registered after a 41-year-old man died at the scene.
Pretorius’s death came days after he survived an apparent attempt on his life at his home in Van Dyk Park, Boksburg, last week.
Pretorius was implicated at the Madlanga Commission by “Witness D”, later identified as Marius van der Merwe, who accused Pretorius of being the “fixer” in the disposal of the corpse of alleged criminal Mbense, who was allegedly killed by rogue Ekurhuleni officers in 2022.
Van der Merwe was assassinated in December.
This is a developing story.
