An estimated 1,105 jobs will be supported through the Hollywoodbets Durban July value chain, with more than 40,000 visitors expected to descend on Durban for the iconic event next week Saturday.

The eThekwini municipality said direct spending for the event is projected to reach R230 million, while the broader economic contribution to the city’s economy is expected to total approximately R798 million.

The projections were revealed during the official media launch of the race held at the Shongweni Club.

“The Durban July weekend transforms our City into a vibrant hub of economic activity, providing a substantial boost to hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, transport operators, retailers, tourism attractions and informal traders. It remains one of the most important economic catalysts on Durban’s annual events calendar,” said eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba.

He said the event will also support the creative economy through the Durban Fashion Fair programme, where nine emerging designers will present their collections at the prestigious race day.

Head of Major Events, Broadcast and Marketing at Race Coast, Stephen Marshall, said the company was proud to host 29 independently operated hospitality venues and VIP marquees “supported by more than 9,000 event staff and an additional 1,000 security personnel.”

This year’s race carries a record R10 million total stake, with R6 million going to the winning connections, making it Africa’s richest race.

The city said extensive preparations are under way, including safety and security operations, traffic management plans and tourism hospitality programmes to ensure the successful hosting of the event.

Metro Police and Traffic Management officers, together with other law enforcement agencies, will maintain a high-visibility presence in and around the Greyville precinct throughout the event period.

The 2026 edition also marks the 130th running of South Africa’s premier horse race, with organisers expecting the event’s “Country Allure” theme to inspire a blend of rural elegance and contemporary fashion.

“While every owner, trainer, jockey, breeder and groom dreams of winning the R10 million Hollywoodbets Durban July, the event simultaneously creates opportunities across multiple sectors, supporting thousands of livelihoods and showcasing Durban on a national and international stage,” Xaba said.
