COOPERATIVE Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has gazetted regulations of the national State of Disaster to deal with the energy crisis in South Africa.
This follows a sitting of the President’s Coordinating Council (PCC) as well as a special sitting of Cabinet on Monday.
The national State of Disaster was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his State of the Nation Address and declared by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs on 9 February 2023 in line with the provisions of the National Disaster Management Act, Act 57 of 2002.
In setting out the rationale for the declaration, Ramaphosa said: “The state of disaster will enable us to provide practical measures that we need to take to support businesses in the food production, storage and retail supply chain, including for the rollout of generators, solar panels and uninterrupted power supply.
