The Madlanga Commission has granted an application by an anonymous businessman, Witness M, to testify in camera, accepting that there are serious security concerns surrounding evidence the witness is expected to give about a major drug bust.
The application was heard briefly on Wednesday morning, with Commission Chair Mbuyiseli Madlanga confirming that the panel had considered the written application and was satisfied that the request should be granted.
Evidence leader Teboho Mosikili said the application outlined “serious security concerns” and submitted that the witness’s identity should remain concealed.
Witness M had originally been scheduled to testify during the week of 6 to 10 July as part of the commission’s drug bust evidence stream.
“We’ve read the application and we are satisfied. The application is granted and the ruling will be circulated to the media. We adjourn for an in-camera hearing,” Madlanga said.
