Anti-apartheid activist and ANC veteran Mac Maharaj used the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Soweto uprising to warn that South Africa’s democratic gains remain unfinished, saying young people must turn frustration over unemployment, inequality and corruption into organised leadership.
Speaking at an ANC intergenerational dialogue at Freedom Park in Tshwane on Monday, Maharaj said South Africa faced serious challenges, including high youth unemployment, inequality, corruption and climate change, and that these could not be addressed without deeper engagement between older and younger generations.
“The challenge before today’s youth is different, but no less significant. The question is not whether young people possess energy, courage and patience for change. The real question is whether they can transform these qualities into leadership. Can they organise, develop ideas and connect their aspirations with the broader needs of society?” he said.
