ANC Deputy President Paul Mashatile was absent from the party’s announcement of its mayoral candidate nominees on Saturday due to health reasons.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula wished Mashatile a speedy recovery as the party prepares for the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE).
Mbalula, who was tasked with announcing the finalists at the party’s ceremony in Sandton, Johannesburg, relayed the well wishes to Mashatile after taking to the podium and acknowledging party leaders and distinguished guests.
“Let me apologise for the deputy president and we wish him a very speedy recovery as he has been booked off for quite some time and he is recovering well at home. We wish him a very speedy recovery,” Mbalula said.
Earlier this month, the Presidency revealed that Mashatile had undergone a “minor surgical procedure” following a visit from President Cyril Ramaphosa, who said he was pleased with the deputy president’s recovery.
It remains unclear how long Mashatile will remain away from official duties. His absence has drawn messages of support and concern from across the political spectrum.
