Matlala refuses to disclose details of Mkhwanazi meeting, citing defence strategy

Controversial businessman and attempted murder and corruption accused Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala has refused to provide further details about his meeting with KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, arguing that doing so would compromise his defence strategy in his criminal case.

Proceedings before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry resumed on Wednesday afternoon with questions focused on Matlala’s 15 April 2025 meeting with Mkhwanazi and what was allegedly discussed about suspended deputy national police commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya and businessman Steve Motsumi.

Evidence leader Adila Hassim pressed Matlala on why he could not answer questions about Motsumi, but he maintained that the information formed part of his defence strategy.

“I’m basing this on, again, my case is in court. So maybe incriminating is not the right word that I’m using. Because I’m repeating again that I still have a case to present in court,” he said.
