The rivalry between Ngizwe Mchunu and supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) was revived on Friday when the two sides exchanged blows and expletives, while gunshots were fired in Inanda, forcing police to intervene and restore order.
The chaos started in the afternoon when Mchunu and his bodyguards returned from a shisanyama in KwaMashu and were preparing to set up at the Dube sports ground near Dube Village Mall in Inanda.
Across the road, EFF supporters were also setting up their stage at the JL Dube Stadium ahead of the party’s Provincial Manifesto Rally, to be addressed by party leader Julius Malema on Saturday.
The launch is being held on the same day as Mchunu’s heritage celebration festival, which is also scheduled for Saturday.
According to Mchunu, EFF supporters crossed over to “provoke” him and his supporters, leading to the skirmishes that followed.
