Parliament’s Section 89 Impeachment Committee has voted overwhelmingly to rescind its recommendation of Advocate Thandazani Madonsela as chief evidence leader in the inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa’s handling of the theft of foreign currency at his Phala Phala farm.
The decision followed a marathon virtual meeting on Tuesday during which committee members deadlocked over whether Madonsela should retain the position.
Committee chairman Makashule Gana eventually put the matter to a vote after members failed to reach consensus.
The motion to rescind Madonsela’s recommendation was supported by 18 members, while nine members voted against it.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) each had two members on the committee.
The dispute centred on whether Madonsela was conflicted after Ramaphosa objected to his appointment, arguing that the advocate “harbour[s] a sense of grievance towards me and that he may act upon it” if appointed to lead
