South African Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe has confirmed that police have opened an inquest docket into the death of former minister and MP Tina Joemat-Pettersson.
“An inquest docket has been registered and is under investigation. [An] autopsy report has been finalised, we are awaiting a final report from the department of health on the cause of death,” Mathe said in a brief statement.

“We were still awaiting a final report from the Department of Health on Joemat-Pettersson’s cause of death. This would only be communicated to her family and would not be released to the public,” Mathe added.
Joemat-Pettersson passed away a day after confirmation that the National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has asked Parliament ethics committee to probe allegations of bribery against Joemat-Pettersson, ANC Chief Whip Pemmy Majodina and Chairperson of Section 194 Inquiry into the suspended public prosecutor Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office.
Mkhwebane has alleged that Joemat-Pettersson approached her husband and asked for a R600 000 bribe in order to ensure that the committee produces favorable outcomes.
Last week, Mkhwebane held a media briefing and played audio recordings which she said were of Joemat-Pettersson and her husband.
In the media briefing, Mkhwebane said she suspected foul play in Joemat-Pettersson’s death.
