Waste collection services have been disrupted in several parts of Johannesburg after protesting casual workers blockaded six Pikitup depots, preventing collection vehicles and permanent employees from carrying out scheduled services.
The latest disruption is part of a labour dispute that began in early July and has repeatedly affected Pikitup depots across the city. In parts of Alexandra, uncollected rubbish has been piling up, with residents telling broadcaster eNCA on Monday the conditions were “chaotic and a health hazard”.
The workers, who are contracted to private waste collection service providers, are demanding to be permanently absorbed by Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity, and say they were promised permanent posts by July.
