Despite problems facing the party, President Cyril Ramaphosa said people who thought that the African National Congress (ANC) would be derailed from power were dreaming.
“That is not going to happen. It’s just dreams because the ANC which has led this process has embedded itself in the hearts and in the minds of our people and through trial and tribulation, through ups and downs, we were able to prevail as the ANC and we were finally able to overcome the 342 years of colonialism and apartheid.”
Ramaphosa spoke at the 112th anniversary ceremony at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga on Monday where he said 1994 was characterised as a breakthrough and not a victory because it was a beachhead moment.
“We had reached a point where now we could march to greater achievements as we moved on to improve the lives of our people. That ANC mission to better the lives of South Africans was continuing and those who underestimated the party would be surprised,’’ he said.
The party is hosting a series of events in the province before its 112th birthday rally at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.
Ramaphosa warned that the “Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck” organisations will not amount to anything the ANC has done.
“All these Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck organisations will not be able to unite a cross-section of South Africans like the ANC”.
He also added that the ANC was not a chance-taker party with no experience to run the country.
The event comes just a month after Zuma announced his intention to campaign for the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe party instead of the ANC ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Zuma has been on a campaign trail for the newly formed MK party and was in Bombela this past weekend where he addressed a strong crowd of supporters.
