THE Presidency has announced that presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko will face an internal disciplinary process following concerns by the Special Investigating Unit over her failure to declare her financial interests.
The Office of the President said in a statement on Sunday that Diko failed to disclose her financial interests to the Sduring its investigation into her alleged involvement in the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) tender scandal.
“The SIU has reported that while the corruption component of the investigation is ongoing, the SIU has thus far not obtained any evidence pointing to Diko’s involvement in the awarding of two contracts by the Gauteng Department of Health to Royal Bhaca or in respect of the irregularities identified in respect of such awards,” said the Presidency.
“During its investigation, the SIU did however identify a concern regarding Ms Diko’s duty to disclose all her financial interests. On the basis of a referral from the SIU on her failure to disclose her financial interests, the Presidency has decided to initiate an internal disciplinary process against Ms Diko.”
In June last year, Diko took a special leave of absence after it emerged that her husband, amaBhaca King Thandisizwe Diko, was awarded over R125 million contracts related to the provision PPE for the Gauteng Department of Health.
She was also suspended from participating in the African National Congress’ (ANC) organisational activities pending disciplinary processes.
According to a preliminary investigation by the SIU, the awarding of contracts to Royal Bhaca, Ledla and Beadica was unlawful.
The report states that the expenditure the department of health incurred on the three companies should be deemed irregular in terms of the Public Finance Management Act and other related laws.
The President’s office says Tyrone Seale will continue acting in Diko’s role until further notice.
