SACP says migrant workers are not SA’s enemy, blames ‘capitalist crises’

The South African Communist Party (SACP) has said African migrant workers are not South Africa’s enemy, and instead blamed “capitalist crises” for migration challenges across the continent.

In a statement issued on Monday following a Politburo meeting held on Friday, the SACP said immigration, including illegal immigration, was a challenge that needed to be addressed, but added that migration was driven by forces beyond the control of individual migrants.

“While we recognise that immigration, including illegal immigration, is undesirable for any country and that it is a problem that requires a solution, we also appreciate the fact that it is driven by objective factors and social forces that exist beyond the individual wishes of the persons affected by it,” the party said.
