More than 28 million South Africans are now registered to vote ahead of the 4 November local government elections, with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) saying online registration has significantly expanded the voters’ roll and reshaped how citizens, particularly young people, register to vote.
The milestone follows the conclusion of the final voter registration weekend, during which all 23,699 voting stations nationwide remained open to allow eligible South Africans to register or update their details before registration closed.
The IEC is expected to announce the final registration figures during a media briefing on Monday.
IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said the commission had already exceeded the 27.7 million voters registered for the 2024 general elections before the latest registration weekend began.
