The weekend will start relatively settled across much of the country before rain and thunderstorms spread across large parts of the interior and eastern regions on Sunday, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).
At the time of publication, SAWS had not issued impact-based warnings specifically covering Friday, Saturday or Sunday, although conditions are expected to become increasingly unsettled as the weekend progresses.
Friday, 2 October
Friday is expected to be mostly fine to partly cloudy across Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the North West.
Johannesburg is expected to reach about 21°C, while Bloemfontein should reach around 24°C and Kimberley about 25°C.
Conditions will be less settled towards the coast, with showers and thundershowers possible over parts of the Eastern Cape.
Gqeberha is expected to reach about 22°C, while Cape Town should remain cooler at around 19°C.
KwaZulu-Natal should have a relatively settled Friday, with Durban reaching about 23°C.
Saturday, 3 October
Saturday should bring warmer and largely dry conditions across much of the northern interior.
Johannesburg is forecast to reach about 24°C, while Polokwane should peak at around 23°C and Mbombela at about 26°C.
Conditions become more unsettled farther south and west, with showers and thundershowers possible over parts of the Northern Cape.
The Free State is expected to become cloudier, while wet and cooler conditions continue over parts of the Eastern Cape.
Gqeberha is forecast to reach only about 18°C.
Rain is also expected over parts of KZN, including Durban, where temperatures should reach around 23°C.
Cape Town is expected to be partly cloudy with a maximum of about 19°C.
Sunday, 4 October
Sunday brings the biggest change in the weekend weather pattern, with showers and thunderstorms expected across a much broader area.
Gauteng is forecast to turn cooler and wetter, with Johannesburg reaching about 19°C.
Showers and thundershowers are also expected over parts of the North West, Free State and Northern Cape, while rain is forecast across parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
KZN and the Eastern Cape are also expected to remain wet, with showers around Durban and Gqeberha.
Durban is expected to reach about 22°C, while Gqeberha should reach around 20°C.
The Western Cape, meanwhile, is expected to improve by Sunday, with Cape Town turning clearer and warmer and reaching about 24°C.
