President Cyril Ramaphosa urged employers on Wednesday to allow workers to go and vote on May 8 2019.
Ramaphosa was speaking at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont, KwaZulu-Natal.
“We call on employers who prevent workers from going to vote to desist from this. Allow voters to vote on 8 May,” said Ramaphosa.
“We’ve heard employers who are hell-bent on preventing workers from voting. Do not stop workers from going to vote. It is their democratic right. Stop violating the rights of workers.”
Ramaphosa also called on companies to implement the national minimum wage for all workers in South Africa.
All companies must implement the national minimum wage without delay so that workers can start moving from poverty wages towards a living wage,” said Ramaphosa.
“There are those who continue to violate workers’ rights. We want them to stop exploiting workers… we want all companies to implement the national minimum wage. I applaud you for the victory you achieved in raising this issue of national minimum wage with the ANC. This is your victory. It was you who said there should be a national minimum wage.”
Turning to corruption, Ramaphosa said his administration was committed to exposing and fighting.
“We want to rid our country of corruption. We want to rid our country of the malfeasance that has been happening in country in the past few years. When money is stolen, it is stolen from the people of our country,” said Ramaphosa.
“We cannot carry on with corruption in SA. We are doing this because we want to renew our country. We want to make sure that in the end the ANC becomes the leader of society.”
Ramaphosa also said government intended to create more jobs for younger people because they were the ones who were the most affected by unemployment.
