The Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan on Tuesday demanded a public apology from the ANC Youth League, over allegations of his inability to bring structural redevelopment to State-Owned Entities (SOEs).
This follows an interview on Monday, in which the ANCYL President Malatji, criticized Gordhan for the increasing dilapidation of SOEs culminating in their sale, claiming that if left unchecked, the Minister will “sell everything”.
“We are told he is feared. We don’t fear him. Instead we are going to meet the president and tell him to remove him because South African Airways (SAA) is a good example. We were told SAA is collapsing and all of a sudden there are private partners and there’s an improvement,” Malatji said.
Earlier this year, ANC Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, made remarks at the ANCWL Conference on how Gordhan has to act quickly in fixing issues at Transnet or else face being moved.
Then the party and Mbalula, quickly released a statement clarifying the SG’s remarks as not pushing for a ministerial reshuffling, but simply as a clarion call.
However, Gordhan has lashed out at his critics saying “there was a concerted campaign to spread false information about the state of the country’s SOEs”.
He insisted that there was progress in the decision his department has taken and will continue to make in bringing about change and financial sustainability to the government owned institutions.
