Ukhozi FM Radio presenter and Crown Gospel Music Awards founder, Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, has passed away after a long battle with lung cancer.

Her husband, Bishop Mpendulo Nkambule, confirmed the 52-year old’s death in a statement, and said she died in the early hours on Monday at Parklands Hospital, surrounded by family and loved ones.

“She departed to be with the Lord. We are grateful for all the prayers, love, and support we received throughout her illness,” he said.

According to the statement, the family would appreciate privacy as they navigate through the challenging time.

In April this year, the Ukhozi FM broadcaster became ill and was unable to complete Eshilo due to vocal problems.

Her colleague Thokozani MaMkhize Ndlovu filled in for her.

Mbokazi-Nkambule hosted the station’s popular gospel show, Eshilo, every Sunday from 09:00 to 12:00.

Bishop Nkambule disclosed that his wife had been diagnosed with lung cancer, amid rife speculation on social media regarding her ill health and increasing absence from the radio station.

Born on November 7, 1971, in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Mbokazi-Nkambule completed her matric at St. Francis College in Mariannhill.

She graduated with a BA degree in English and Politics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, an Honours degree in Media and Communications and a Public Relations Diploma from Damelin.

Mbokazi-Nkambule entered the media industry by starring in the reality show “Livewire” on NNTV, and worked as a news and current affairs presenter for SABC 1.

She founded her public relations company Mirror PR in 1999, followed by another company called World Gospel PowerHouse, which initiates various Christian based projects.

Condolences have been pouring with expressions of sadness at her passing and praises for her legacy as a trailblazer in gospel music and in media.
