THE ANC said on Thursday that suspended ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule was not among leaders expected to attend President Cyril Ramaphosa’s January 8 statement on Saturday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.

This after an ANC branch in the Vhembe region confirmed that it was going to host Magashule at a charity event in Limpopo.

However, at a press briefing on the state of readiness of the ANC’s 110th anniversary, head of organising and campaigns, Nomvula Mokonyane denied any knowledge of Magashule’s charity event scheduled to take place in parallel with the party’s activities.

Mokonyane said Magashule was not expected to take part in the festivities, including the birthday rally of the governing party.

According to the poster circulating on social media, Magashule is expected to visit orphans, donate soccer kits and attend a soccer tournament in Madimbo village in Limpopo.

“We have no knowledge of the secretary’s event as it’s not on our official programme,” said Mokonyane.

EWN also quoted Mokonyane as saying that ‘it is not in our formal programme as we have said even in the statement there are many initiatives that are taking place outside of our plans, and we have come out to say where people are doing their own events, let it not be in the name of the ANC.”

Magashule, who is set to throw his hat into the ring for the ANC’s presidency in December, was suspended from the party after he was charged with corruption, fraud, theft and money-laundering for his alleged role in the Free State asbestos saga.
