The 2026  FIFA World Cup final reaches its climax as defending champions Argentina face Spain at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The kick-off is scheduled for 7 pm starting with the closing ceremony, with millions expected to tune in for what promises to be a captivating battle between the reigning South American and European Champions.

The final carries extra significance for Argentina, who are bidding to become back-to-back world champions after defeating France in a dramatic penalty shootout in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final in Qatar.

That victory secured Lionel Messi’s long-awaited World Cup triumph and Argentina’s third global title.

Spain, meanwhile, are appearing in their first World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 2010 in South Africa, as they chase a second world crown.

Argentina’s route to the final has once again showcased the grit and resilience that defined their title-winning campaign four years ago.

Lionel Scaloni’s men edged England in a hard-fought semi-final after overcoming a series of stern knockout tests, relying on their experience, defensive organisation and ability to produce decisive moments in pressure situations.

Meanwhile, Captain Lionel Messi has continued to inspire the Albiceleste in what is widely expected to be his final World Cup appearance.

Spain, however, arrived in New Jersey with arguably the tournament’s most impressive form. Luis de la Fuente’s side has remained unbeaten throughout the competition, combining their trademark possession football with relentless pressing and clinical finishing.

Rising teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has been among the standout performers, while Spain’s balanced squad has demonstrated both attacking flair and defensive solidity en route to the final. Their captain, Rodri, has been another outstanding performer

On paper, Spain enters the match as slight favourites. Several bookmakers and predictive models give La Roja the edge, with Spain priced around -160 (to lift the trophy) compared to Argentina’s +125, reflecting confidence in the Europeans’ consistent performances throughout the tournament.

Nevertheless, Argentina’s pedigree in major finals and their knack for delivering under pressure ensure they remain dangerous opponents despite being slight underdogs.

Sunday’s showdown also represents a fascinating clash of footballing philosophies. Spain will seek to dominate possession and dictate the tempo, while Argentina is expected to rely on their experience, tactical discipline, and devastating counter-attacking ability.

With Messi aiming to end his World Cup journey on the highest possible note and Spain looking to usher in a new era led by a gifted young generation, all the ingredients are in place for a memorable finale.

Whether Argentina successfully defend their title or Spain reclaim football’s biggest prize after 16 years, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to conclude with one of the most anticipated finals in recent history.
