Former SA Army chief Lieutenant General Gilbert Ramano died at 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria on Sunday, according to the Defence Department.
Minister Angie Motshekga, defence secretary Thobeka Gamede and SA National Defence Force Rudzani Maphwany extended their condolences to Ramano’s family, saying the department had suffered a profound loss.
They said Ramano was a revered freedom fighter, military commander and diplomat who served South Africa with honour, distinction and integrity.
“He… played a pivotal role in the integration of former liberation armies into the formation of the new South African National Defence Force in 1994,” a statement read.
“His leadership during this critical transition period helped lay the foundation for a unified and professional defence force in a democratic South Africa.”
The department said throughout his career, Ramano contributed immensely to the transformation and modernisation of the SANDF and later served his country with equal dedication in the diplomatic service.
His legacy was one of patriotism, courage and unwavering commitment to building a peaceful and democratic nation, it said.
Details on his official memorial and funeral service will be communicated in due course.
