If your group chat has suddenly turned into a football debate, your social media feed is flooded with team jerseys, or your friends are making bold predictions about Saturday’s result, chances are you have been caught up in Soweto Derby fever.

As Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs prepare to renew their rivalry at FNB Stadium on Saturday, the excitement is spilling beyond the pitch and into group chats, social media timelines, pubs, restaurants and living rooms across the country.

The two Soweto giants meet in a Betway Premiership clash at 3.30pm, with the match sold out and thousands of supporters expected at the Johannesburg stadium.

While some fans will experience the action from the stands, others are preparing to turn their homes and favourite viewing spots into matchday arenas.

For those without stadium tickets, the plan is simple: find a screen, gather friends, wear the team colours and make sure supporters of the opposing side hear about it if your team wins.

But in the build-up to the derby, the football conversation is rarely limited to tactics, formations and team selections.

It is also about who has the better players, whose team is in better form, who will score first and, perhaps most importantly, who will have to endure the jokes at work on Monday morning.

The online banter has become part of the spectacle. Supporters are using memes, videos, team photographs and score predictions to make their case, while friends and family members backing opposing clubs turn the fixture into a personal competition.

A prediction of a comfortable victory can quickly attract challenges from rival supporters. A confident social media post before kick-off can become ammunition for teasing if the result goes the other way.

And when a goal goes in, the reactions are almost immediate, with celebrations, match clips and messages flooding group chats.

For many supporters, the banter is as much a part of the derby experience as the football itself. Even those nowhere near FNB Stadium get to participate in the rivalry.

The only problem comes when the final score does not favour your team and you have to face the consequences in the very same group chat where you made your bold predictions.

Watch parties offer another way to experience the derby

For supporters who could not secure stadium tickets, organised viewing events offer an opportunity to enjoy the match alongside fellow football fans.

Cheeky Tiger has advertised live screenings of the Pirates-Chiefs clash on big screens across all six of its branches on Saturday, encouraging supporters to arrive in their team jerseys.

The screenings offer fans an opportunity to experience the tension, celebrations and arguments that make derby day special, without having to be inside the stadium.

In Soweto, Disoufeng Pub in Meadowlands West has also promoted a derby screening as part of its Spirit Fest event on October 31.

The event’s advertised programme includes the live match, music and entertainment featuring Emtee and other performers. Promotional material lists general admission and VIP ticket options for the wider event.

Supporters planning to attend have been advised to confirm ticketing, entry and screening arrangements directly with the venues before travelling.

For those who prefer watching football in company, the appeal is obvious. There is the big screen, the noise, the collective reaction to every goal and the inevitable arguments over refereeing decisions.

And if you happen to attend with friends who support the opposing team, the result could determine who gets to boast for the rest of the weekend.

Thierry Henry adds international star power

The excitement surrounding Saturday’s encounter has also received an international boost, with the Premier Soccer League announcing that former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry will attend the derby as part of celebrations marking 30 years of professional football.

Henry is expected to meet supporters and present a prize to the winner of Betway’s S’bonise & Win campaign, which celebrates fans who show their loyalty through their team colours and regalia.

His appearance adds another attraction to a fixture already renowned for its passionate supporters and intense atmosphere.

The PSL’s anniversary celebrations also provide an opportunity to reflect on the role the competition has played in South African football over the past three decades.

With both clubs confirming that tickets have sold out, supporters without valid tickets will have to follow the action through television broadcasts or other authorised viewing platforms.

For those watching elsewhere, the matchday rituals are familiar: jerseys laid out before kick-off, food prepared for the occasion, friends debating starting line-ups and phones ready to capture every celebration.

The online rivalry is also expected to continue long after the final whistle, with supporters preparing their predictions, photographs, videos and post-match reactions.

But the most entertaining moments are often the ones nobody sees coming.

A supporter who confidently predicts a big win may have some explaining to do afterwards. A last-minute goal could turn a quiet watch party into a full-blown celebration, while a draw could leave both sets of supporters arguing over missed opportunities.

Whatever the result, one thing is certain: the conversation will not end when the referee blows the final whistle.

For Pirates and Chiefs supporters, Saturday is about three points, pride and the right to claim bragging rights over their fiercest rivals.

And for anyone who has been making bold predictions in the family or work WhatsApp group, the real test may come on Monday morning.
