CORRUPTION-accused Zandile Gumede has duly been elected as the new regional chairperson of Ethekwini region.
Gumede accepted the nomination for regional chairperson in absentia through a letter that reads: “I am always available and willing to serve the ANC in any position.”.
Gumede could not attend the ANC’s eThekwini conference because she is affected by the party’s step aside rule.
Gumede beat Thabani Nyawose who is the current speaker of the region.
The new ANC eThekwini regional deputy chair is Thembo Ntuli, while Musa Nciki was elected as ANC secretary in the region.
Nkosenhle Madlala was elected deputy secretary, while Zoe Shabalala was elected treasurer.
Gumede stands accused of using her political influence as mayor, shortly after assuming office in 2016, which resulted in the irregular awarding of a Durban Solid Waste (DSW) tender.
Gumede allegedly received close to R3 million in kickbacks from an irregular 2017 DSW tender, according to a 324-page indictment presented at the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.
