Bafana Bafana wrote a golden new chapter in South African football history in the early hours of Thursday morning, beating South Korea 1-0 in Monterrey to qualify for the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time.
Hugo Broos’ men produced a disciplined and determined performance to secure a deserved victory and book their place in the Round of 32.
The decisive moment came in the 63rd minute when Thapelo Maseko — who was named man of the match — found the bottom corner, sending South African fans into wild celebrations and sealing one of the most significant victories in the country’s football history.
The match saw Bafana Bafana rise to the occasion against a highly rated South Korean side who had arrived with serious hopes of reaching the next round.
The win moved South Africa onto four points in Group A, enough to finish second behind co-hosts Mexico and advance to the knockout stages.
Mexico topped the group with nine points after beating Czechia 3-0, while South Africa finished second on four.
South Korea ended third on three points and must wait to see whether they progress as one of the best third-placed teams, while Czechia finished bottom of the group with one point.
Knowing that qualification was within reach, Bafana Bafana approached the encounter with determination and tactical discipline.
South Korea enjoyed spells of possession and looked dangerous at times, but South Africa’s defence remained organised and resilient throughout the contest.
The backline, which had come under scrutiny after defensive lapses in previous matches, stood firm against repeated South Korean attacks.
Bafana Bafana looked threatening on the counterattack and gradually grew into the game. Their persistence paid off midway through the second half when Maseko found space and fired home what proved to be the winning goal.
Following the breakthrough, South Africa displayed tremendous composure, frustrating South Korea and protecting their slender lead until the final whistle.
When the referee blew for full-time, the celebrations began both on the pitch and across South Africa as the magnitude of the achievement sank in.
The victory sparked scenes of jubilation among South African supporters, many of whom had feared the worst after Bafana Bafana’s difficult start to the tournament.
Bafana opened their World Cup campaign with a disappointing defeat to Mexico, a result that left many questioning whether the team could compete at the highest level.
However, the players responded with courage and belief, refusing to let the setback define their tournament. A draw against Czechia kept them alive before Thursday morning’s win delivered the breakthrough South African football had waited decades to see.
For many supporters, the qualification represents one of the greatest moments in South African football since the country hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2010.
Government also joined the celebrations following the historic victory.
In a statement, the Government Communication and Information System congratulated Bafana Bafana on their win over South Korea, describing the result as a proud moment for South Africa.
“The impressive result is a proud moment for South Africa and reflects the team’s determination, discipline and fighting spirit on one of the world’s biggest sporting stages.”
Bafana Bafana now prepare for their biggest challenge yet.
South Africa will face co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 on Sunday at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood. Kick-off is 12pm Pacific Time, which is 21:00 SA time.
