The SA National Defence Force has confirmed that a group of critically injured soldiers who require urgent medical attention have arrived back home after being wounded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“We urge the public to respect and afford privacy to the injured members and their families during the healing process. The SANDF in coordination with other relevant role players has worked tirelessly to ensure the safe return of our wounded members,” it said in a statement.
Around 100 injured and ill soldiers will arrive in South Africa throughout the course of the week. They were meant to be sent home last week, but the mission was cancelled.
Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga, announced their return on Monday at the funeral of rifleman Richard Chokoe, one of 14 SANDF members who lost their lives in the DRC.
