Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has accepted an apology from Brigadier Abraham Nkwashu following remarks made at the Madlanga Commission regarding the transfer of J50 arrest warrant dockets.

In a written apology on Saturday issued through his lawyers, Nkwashu said his earlier testimony created the impression that Lesufi may have acted improperly or interfered in the transfer of the dockets.

He clarified that he was not aware of any legal authority allowing the Premier to issue a directive for the transfer of dockets at the time of his testimony, but acknowledged that his statement was misleading.

“I regret that my words created the impression that you acted improperly, engaged in political interference, or behaved unethically,” Nkwashu said.

“All available facts confirm that there was a mix-up of different issues and that you were never involved in the transfer of the dockets.”

He added that he never intended to harm Lesufi’s reputation and apologised for any embarrassment or hurt caused, stating that he respects the Premier’s “commitment to lawful and accountable governance.”

In a statement issued by the Gauteng Provincial Government, Lesufi said he noted and accepted the apology.

“The Premier welcomes and accepts the apology in the spirit in which it has been offered,” read the statement.

The statement added that Lesufi emphasised the importance of accountability, professionalism and respect in public engagements, particularly in formal processes such as commissions of inquiry.

“Having considered the matter and the subsequent apology, the Premier regards the issue as resolved and closed,” the statement noted.

The Office of the Premier confirmed it would not be making any further comment.
