PARLIAMENT’s Health Committee chairperson has welcomed the release of a Special Investigating Unit (SIU) report into the former Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize’s involvement in the controversial R150 million Digital Vibes communications contract.

According to the SIU report, Mkhize and his son are alleged to have benefited from the awarding of a COVID-19 communications contract to Digital Vibes, a company owned by close associates.

Dr Kenneth Jacobs said that his committee would now write to current Health Minister Joe Phaahla to hear the department’s plan of action.

One of the recommendations in the SIU report is for the Health Department to eliminate the use of consultants.

“We welcome the report and the committee is looking forward to its engagements with the Department of Health on the matter. The committee will, among other things, hear the department’s plan of action following the release of the report,” said Jacobs.

“We will write to the Minister to arrange a meeting where the committee will get a briefing from the department on the report. As Parliament is on recess, I will write to the Chair of Chairs to request permission for the committee to convene this meeting.”
