It’s not every day that you see the face of the man making a personal video call to an inmate, especially one during an official raid conducted by the National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, and his team.
An almost comical moment unfolded during an unannounced search at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre in Cape Town when a man inadvertently video-called an inmate, only to find himself face-to-face with officials led by the National Commissioner of Correctional Services.

The man, identified only as “Rudi” appeared visibly alarmed when he realised he was speaking directly to officials conducting the raid.
The man was immediately warned to stop contacting inmates via contraband cellphones.
When told that officials would “visit him,” the call was abruptly terminated.

The incident occurred during a surprise Easter weekend crackdown led by Commissioner Thobakgale, supported by the Department of Correctional Services Emergency Support Team (EST) and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The raid uncovered cellphones, drugs, sharp objects, and weapons, underscoring the scale of contraband smuggling inside South African prisons.
