The South African Police Service (SAPS) Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has arrested a Western Cape mayor, municipal manager and chief financial officer (CFO) over alleged corruption linked to a security services contract.
The three were arrested on Thursday following an investigation into allegations that a businessman was solicited for kickbacks in exchange for the continuation of his security services contract at a municipality on the Western Cape’s southern coast.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the investigation was prompted by information received by police about the alleged solicitation of kickbacks.
“The arrests follow information received by the police regarding allegations that a businessman who had been awarded a security services contract was being solicited for kickbacks in exchange for the continuation of the contract,” Mathe said.
It is alleged that the businessman had already paid hundreds of thousands of rands because he feared his security services contract would be terminated.
The mayor, municipal manager and CFO face charges of corruption and are expected to appear in court on Monday.
Police have not disclosed the names of the officials or the municipality involved.
The investigation is being conducted by the PKTT, which has been probing the allegations surrounding the security services contract.
