Must read

FORMER Nelson Mandela Bay mayor and United Democratic Movement’s strongman, Mongameli Bobani has died after being admitted to hospital three weeks ago with COVID-19.

His death was confirmed by UDM leader Bantu Holomisa in a statement on Wednesday night.

“We extend our condolences to his wife, children, family and friends, as well as the UDM in Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Holomisa.

“We commend Councillor Bobani for the good work he did for the people in Nelson Mandela Bay and his tireless efforts to grow the UDM in the Eastern Cape. He was always available and ready to roll up his sleeves, and we will miss his energy and enthusiasm.”

Bobani was removed as Nelson Mandela Bay mayor in December 2019 through a motion of no confidence.

He had been accused of corruption and mismanagement.

On August 3, Bobani was elected to the position of MMC for Infrastructure and Engineering in Nelson Mandela Bay by the interim mayor, Thsonono Buyeye.

He replaced former ANC councillor and convicted criminal, Andile Lungisa, who held the position from 2018 to 2020. The metro is currently facing a Day Zero due to water shortages in the region.
