South African musician, singer and songwriter Steve Kekana has passed away at the age of 62 due to COVID-19-related complications.
The “Take Your Love” musician died early on Thursday morning according to his manager Xolani Majozi.
The South Africa Music Performance Rights Association (SAMPRA) has paid tribute to the late musician, saying the local music industry has lost a real legend.
“It is with great sadness we learn of the passing of Ntate Steve Kekana. A gifted artist whose voice echoed through time and space,” said SAMPRA in a statement.
“We extend our condolences to the Kekana family, friends, and industry colleagues. The music industry has truly lost a legend.”
Joburg City Theatres (JCT) has sent condolences to the family of Kekana, describing him as a legendary singer who serenaded lovers with his soulful and beautiful ballads in the late 1970s and 1980.
“Kekana took music lovers on a nostalgic journey through his melody. Steve Kekana was among the other greatest giants who performed on the iconic Mandela stage at Joburg Theatre. His last show, at the Theatre: Iphupho the Dream Ikusasa, which focused on uncovering talent and celebrating arts legends and icons,” said Joburg City Theatres Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema.
“Our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved South African Music folklore. A selfless and courageous person who never let any obstacles or disability come his way to reaching his dreams. We are deeply saddened by the news”.
The legendary musician recorded more than 40 albums.
Kekana lost his eye sight at the age of five. He worked with famous musicians like PJ Powers, Ray Phiri and Joe Nina.
The FAME FET, through Sepedi Music Awards, honoured the late singer in 2018.
Kekana was a university graduate with B Juris and LLB degrees. He was an Advocate and a lecturer in Labour Law at the University of South Africa.
