THE deteriorating political situation in KwaZulu-Natal has forced the ANC to postpone its national executive committee this weekend, Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte confirmed on Friday.
The tensions on the political scene in Nkandla reached their pinnacle on Friday as protesters, including members of the Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Associations (MKMVA), gathered outside the former president Jacob Zuma’s homestead ahead of his incarceration.
Zuma must present himself to either the Nkandla or Johannesburg Central police station.
The court has also issued a warrant of committal to the head of the Westville prison in Durban that Zuma be received at that prison.
“In arriving at this decision the National Officials were mindful of the situation developing in KwaZulu-Natal and the need for ANC to give clear and principled leadership to ensure the maintenance of the rule of law and to avoid any violence, injury or loss of life,” said Duarte.
“NEC members will be deployed to KZN and will work with the provincial leadership in his regard.”
She said the date for the NEC meeting will be communicated in due course.
Meanwhile, Deputy chief justice Raymond Zondo has taken on the role of acting chief justice.
This was announced by the office of the chief justice on Friday.
The announcement comes on the same day as Zuma filed an urgent application for the rescission of the Constitutional Court ruling in terms of which he was sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court.
Zuma has denied that he deliberately walked out of the State Capture Inquiry after Zondo refused to recuse himself and says he left so he could take his medication.
