STAFF REPORTER|

THE African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has announced Nomusa Dube-Ncube as the premier candidate to take over from Sihle Zikalala following his sudden resignation last week.

Dube-Ncube was nominated after interviews with her and two other women over the weekend, Bheki Mtolo, the party’s provincial secretary in KwaZulu-Natal, said on Monday.

Mtolo said they were proud to announce the province’s first female premier-elect on the eve of Women’s Day.

“We know that non-sexism is embedded in the ANC’s very core mission. We pride ourselves that as the ANC in KZN, we have moved one more step ahead to the realisation of women’s emancipation and the founding principles of the Freedom Charter.”

Mtolo said the party was confident in Dube-Ncube’s leadership capabilities.

“She is not new in the leadership position as she previously served in various positions in the organisation and in government. Born in KwaMashu is armed with a Masters’s Degree in Public Administration, and is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.”

Once the provincial legislature, where the ANC has more than 50% of the seats, officially elects her, three of the country’s nine provinces will now have a female as premier.

Dube-Ncube, who is serving as the KZN Finance MEC, has accepted the nomination.
