DAVID Mabuza says if nominated, he will be available as a candidate for the position of Deputy President in the African National Congress (ANC) when the governing party elects new leadership in December.
This comes after his branch in Barberton, Mpumalanga, said at the weekend that it will nominate him for the position of Deputy President of the ANC.
“If they nominate me to serve, I will accept nomination. My branch here in Barberton has a right to nominate. It’s their right. I will definitely avail myself if nominated,” said Mabuza.
Asked by reporters what he thought about several party leaders who are also gunning for the position of ANC Deputy Presidency, Mabuza responded by saying that he was “deeply” concerned by the level of desperation taking place in the governing party at the moment.
ANC Treasurer-General Paul Mashatile, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola and Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi are some of the leaders vying for the ANC Deputy Presidency alongside Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane.
Earlier this month, Mabuza’s home province of Mpumalnga announced that it would not support him for the Deputy Presidency position after the provincial executive committee (PEC) resolved that it would instead support Lamola.
“There is a sense of desperation in the ANC at the moment but we will certainly correct that after the national conference in December,” said Mabuza.
The ANC, which has not been able to successfully address the country’s social challenges, will elect new leadership in December.
