GOOD Party leader Patricia de Lille has officially announced Brett Herron as the party’s mayoral candidate for the City of Cape Town in the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections, marking Herron’s second bid for the city’s top office following his previous run in 2021.

Speaking at the announcement, De Lille said the decision was rooted in Herron’s long-standing record of integrity and service.

“It gives me great pleasure to introduce Brett Herron,” she told supporters.

“Brett and I have worked together for many years, across different chapters of public service and political life. He is not someone who waits to be invited into the conversation or stands on the sidelines offering criticism. He steps forward, asks the right questions, offers practical solutions, and works tirelessly to make them happen.”

De Lille emphasised that Cape Town must be built not only for its appearance and beauty but also to deliver dignity and quality of life for its residents.

“Throughout the years, Brett has challenged us to think differently, to think long term, and to focus on what really matters: improving the lives of the people we serve,” she said.

Herron’s career in public service spans more than a decade. From 2011 to 2018, he served as Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development under the Democratic Alliance (DA). In November 2018, he resigned from the DA and his council position, citing the party’s leadership blocking affordable, integrated inner-city housing projects on well-located public land.

Following his resignation, Herron co-founded the GOOD Party with De Lille in early 2019.

He has since alternated between provincial and national leadership, serving in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 2019 to 2022 and returning in May 2024, where he currently sits on several standing committees.

De Lille also highlighted Herron’s academic credentials.

“What many people may not know is that Brett combines practical experience with significant academic achievement. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Legal Studies, an LLB degree, and a Master of Science in Cities from the London School of Economics.

“His academic work, combined with decades of practical experience, has given him a deep understanding of how cities function, how they grow, and how they can be transformed to create opportunity for all,” said de Lille.

De Lille reiterated the party’s vision for Cape Town. She said the city must be built not only for its appearance and beauty, but also to deliver dignity and quality of life for its residents.

Herron’s track record in transport and urban development, combined with his advocacy for affordable housing, positions him as a central figure in the party’s campaign.
