KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli and King Misuzulu kaZwelithini jointly led this year’s Umkhosi weLembe Heritage Day commemorations, bringing together cultural leaders, government representatives and community members in celebration of the province’s rich heritage.
The commemorations began with a morning prayer and wreath-laying ceremony at the final resting place of King Shaka kaSenzangakhona in KwaDukuza. The solemn tribute honoured the legacy of the founder of the Zulu nation and recognised his enduring contribution to South Africa’s cultural and historical heritage.
Following the ceremony, participants embarked on a cultural procession to the main event held at King Zwelithini Stadium in uMlazi, within the eThekwini Municipality, where thousands gathered to celebrate Heritage Day.
The event showcased the importance of preserving cultural traditions, indigenous knowledge and historical identity, while highlighting the significance of Heritage Day as a platform to honour the country’s diverse cultural heritage.

The annual Umkhosi weLembe programme remains one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most significant heritage events, commemorating the life and leadership of King Shaka while encouraging present and future generations to preserve and celebrate their cultural roots.
