Thembi Kgatlana scored the only goal as South Africa beat Burkina Faso 1-0 on Tuesday night and advanced to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after Côte d’Ivoire defeated Tanzania 2-1 in the other Group B match.
Kgatlana struck from close range in the 21st minute at the Moulay Rachid Stadium after Fikile Magama’s delivery found the forward inside the penalty area.
The result lifted the 2022 African champions into second place in Group B with four points, three behind group winners Côte d’Ivoire. Burkina Faso and Tanzania were eliminated after finishing with three points each.
Banyana will face hosts Morocco in Rabat on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals and automatic qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The four losing quarter-finalists will contest two CAF play-off matches, with the winners advancing to the FIFA Play-Off Tournament for the World Cup.
