Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth has urged employers to make reasonable arrangements for employees to exercise their constitutional right to vote in Wednesday’s local government elections.
“The right to vote is a cornerstone of our democracy and one of the most significant gains of our constitutional dispensation. As a country, we must continue to safeguard this right and create an environment in which all eligible citizens are able to participate meaningfully in the democratic process,” Meth said in a statement.
“We encourage employers and employees to work together in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect. Through proper planning and constructive engagement, workplaces can support employees who wish to cast their votes while ensuring that business operations continue effectively.”
The department encouraged employees who need time to vote to communicate with their employers in advance so that suitable arrangements can be made.
“Open and transparent engagement can assist both parties in identifying practical solutions that balance workplace requirements with the exercise of constitutional rights,” the department said.
President Cyril Ramaphosa declared November 4 a national public holiday in September under Section 2A of the Public Holidays Act of 1994 to allow registered voters to participate in the elections.
Voting stations will open at 7am and close at 9pm. Unlike in national and provincial elections, voters must cast their ballots at the voting station in the ward where they are registered.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has also been conducting special voting on Monday and Tuesday for approved voters unable to visit voting stations on election day.
Meth said the department would continue working with organised business, labour, civil society and other institutions to promote awareness of workers’ rights and responsibilities.
“Democracy flourishes when citizens participate. Every eligible South African should be encouraged to make their voice heard through the ballot box and to contribute to the future of our nation,” she said.
