ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to officially close the 14th African National Conference (ANC) Gauteng Provincial Conference at the Lakes Hotel in Benoni, Ekurhuleni, on Sunday.

On Friday, the provincial conference had a few outstanding matters including whether to allow Ekurhuleni Region to be a part of the conference.

This was followed by an urgent court application by branch delegate Jabulani Sithole, who asked the court to interdict the conference because of the unresolved matter with the 19 quarantined votes from Ekurhuleni.

However, the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg later struck the case off the roll, saying Sithole had failed to convince the court of the urgency of his application.

On Sunday morning, after hours of robust debates over the eligibility of branches to participate at the Gauteng ANC provincial conference, credentials were finally adopted at 6am.

The conference will now move to nominations of senior officials on Sunday, including the top five.

Co-operative governance and human settlements MEC Lebogang Maile and Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, the current ANC Gauteng provincial deputy chair, are contenders for the provincial chair position.

Lesufi’ supporters insist he’s one of the few capable ANC leaders, who can arrest the decline in support for the party in Gauteng ahead of the crucial 2024 elections if he’s elected as new chairperson.

Supporters of Maile, on the other hand, believe he’s the most suitable leader to replace David Makhura as ANC leader in Gauteng.

Ramaphosa is expected to talk about the advancement of the goals articulated by the Freedom Charter and the renewal project of the ANC.
