President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to participate in Mandela Day Walk and Run on Sunday at the DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
The president will join thousands of walkers who participate in the annual 5km walk as they commemorate 18 July, marked as Nelson Mandela International Day.
2026 Mandela Day, themed: “It is still in our hands to combat poverty, inequality and social injustice through acts of service, solidarity and compassion.” Mandela Day challenges people to dedicate 67 minutes on the day in service to others as a symbol of the 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted to the struggle against Apartheid.
Ramaphosa’s participation in the Walk is a reaffirmation of government’s commitment to preserve and advance Mandela’s legacy, and a further invitation to South Africans to regard companionship, “service and active citizenship in helping to combat poverty and inequality,” according to a statement on Friday by the Presidency.
“The event provides an opportunity for South African to honour Madiba’s legacy not only through participation, but by recommitting them to building stronger, more caring and more resilient communities,” the Presidency said.
Ramaphosa will also be joined by Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi amongst other government officials.
