THE Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has approached the courts to recoup more than R8.7bn irregularly awarded to several private companies by Eskom.
This was revealed on Wednesday by SIU head Andy Mothibi, who presented a report on allegations of corruption, fraud, mismanagement and other irregularities at Eskom, during a meeting with the Standing Committee on Public Accounts.
Mothibi said that in one of the applications the court had already set aside a R3.7bn contract.
Mothibi added that the SIU has identified 5 452 officials at Eskom who failed to declare their financial interests.
A total of 134 officials were referred for disciplinary action.
He said 135 officials were also found to be doing business with Eskom.
The SIU has since referred 39 cases to the National Prosecuting Authority for possible prosecution, Mothibi told SCOPA.
He added that a further 32 cases have been referred to the Asset Forfeiture Unit for the attachments of assets which have been red flagged as proceeds of crime.
