Suspended Organised Crime Unit officer Sergeant Fannie Nkosi appeared in the Thohoyandou High Court in Limpopo on Friday, facing four charges, including theft of dagga, fraud, defeating the ends of justice, and theft of a police forensic report. The matter was postponed to 16 July for a formal bail application.

Nkosi has remained behind bars for more than a month.

There was a heavy police presence in and around the court during proceedings.
The latest charges stem from allegations linked to a 2022 case in which a suspect was arrested for possession of dagga, unlicensed firearms, and explosives.

According to a South African Police Service (SAPS) statement issued by national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe on Thursday, investigations by the Commission’s Recommendations Investigative Task Team found that Nkosi allegedly collected the original case docket under the pretence that he had been sent by Head Office.

Police further allege that months later, Nkosi returned to Thohoyandou and identified himself as a colonel from Head Office before removing confiscated dagga from police custody.

“He later booked in the exhibit at Head Office, but it was later discovered that one of the exhibit bags containing the dagga was tampered with,” Mathe said.
Police subsequently added charges of defeating and obstructing the course of justice against Nkosi.

Nkosi’s legal troubles escalated following his testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where he became one of the commission’s most controversial witnesses amid allegations of links to underworld figures, leaking confidential police information and interfering in criminal investigations.

Following his testimony, police raided Nkosi’s home and allegedly recovered cash, state dockets and ammunition.

Nkosi was arrested on 3 April and is also facing charges including unlawful possession of a stun grenade, contravening the Firearms Control Act, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of SAPS property and possession of police dockets.
