West Ham United have sacked head coach Nuno Espírito Santo. The decision follows a disappointing start to the Championship season that left the London side eighth in the table and six points behind leaders Middlesbrough.
The tension peaked on Saturday during a 3-1 home defeat to West Bromwich Albion.
As the match progressed, Nuno felt the heat from the supporters, with dejected fans departing the London Stadium early. The loss followed a 3-2 defeat to Southampton, marking consecutive home failures for the team widely seen as favourites for automatic promotion.
Nuno took charge in September 2025 after the club fired Graham Potter. While he remained in the role after West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League last season, the transition to the second tier has been fraught.
In 13 league matches, the club has won only six and managed just three clean sheets.
The struggles extended to the attack. Strikers Joel Piroe, Pablo Felipe and Taty Castellanos, all signed under Nuno, have combined for only five league goals this season.
Jarrod Bowen leads the scoring with seven, but the squad has struggled with its identity and a lack of balance in midfield, with Soungoutou Magassa and Edson Alvarez falling out of favour.
The board’s review concluded that a change was necessary to keep the club’s objectives on track. Alongside Nuno, assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa have also left the club.
Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville will take temporary charge for Wednesday’s trip to Cardiff City.
