The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) will officially announce the results of the 2026 local government elections at 6pm on Sunday at the National Results Operations Centre in Midrand, following four days of counting and verification.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver remarks at the ceremony, which will formally conclude the national results declaration process. With more than 99% of voting districts counted by Sunday afternoon, provisional results show the ANC remains South Africa’s largest party, with about 30.8% of the combined vote, followed by the DA on 24.6% and the MK Party on 9.7%.
The results represent a significant setback for the ANC, which secured 45.6% in the 2021 municipal elections, while the DA has increased its share of the vote. Voter turnout is estimated at about 52%, with widespread political fragmentation leaving more than 130 municipalities without outright majorities.
The IEC has also been dealing with objections and recounts. It said on Sunday that outstanding objections would not prevent the announcement, although certain results could still be amended.
