DOZENS of EFF supporters staged a picket outside the Mangaung maximum prison on Friday and demanded the removal of Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola.

The picket follows confirmation by the Department of Correctional Services that convicted Facebook rapist Thabo Bester has escaped the Mangaung maximum prison in the Free State province.

The picket demanded the removal of Lamola for failing to provide leadership, the termination of G4S private security contract and the immediate arrest of Bester.

EFF provincial chairperson Coach Liphoko read out the memorandum outside the Mangaung maximum prison.

“It has come to the attention of the EFF that the privately owned company G4S that manages Mangaung has operated with the highest level of hypocrisy. Some inhuman and corruptible acts have taken place over the last 23 years,” Liphoko said.

The EFF said the escape of Bester from the prison placed the life of ordinary people in danger.

On Thursday, Correctional Services acting Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale confirmed that Bester was assisted to escape from prison.
